The singing silences

A Visual and Sonic Odyssey into the Human Heart

Step into a space where image, music, and poetry meet to explore the depths of the human experience. The Singing Silences is much more than a photography exhibition: it is an immersive and sensory experience that invites contemplation and intimate listening.

Designed by composer and photographer Jean-François Léger, this project presents a series of portraits and scenes captured over the years. Each photographic work is intimately woven with an original musical score, specially composed for each picture.

The pairing is a delicate and powerful fusion, grasping the unspoken, everything that surfaces in a look, a gesture, or a silence. The music does not just accompany; it is a composition that reveals the emotional core of the image, transforming the viewing into a shared auditory and visual immersion.

The Artist's Vision: The Pursuit of the Unspoken

The work of Jean-François Léger is guided by a profound search for the intimate and the invisible life force within each individual. Through his lens, he strives to capture what is expressed not through words, but through a gaze, a subtle gesture, or a profound silence.

His photography is an approach to this inner world, seeking to illuminate humanity in its multiple forms: fragile, resilient, strong, and poetic. Leger's approach is deeply rooted in the dramaturgy of the stage. This deliberate choice elevates the photography beyond a simple visual record, enhancing its atmosphere and reinforcing the idea that each image is a character illuminated on its own stage.

The experience

Monumental images: the Inner Whispers

The core of this immersive experience lies in a series of powerful photographs, images that capture the unspoken, the fragile yet resilient essence of the human condition. These images are presented in oversized format, mounted directly on the immense walls. This deliberate choice creates a superhuman-scale dialogue with the visitor, fundamentally changing the very relationship one has with the image. By being magnified, the photographs powerfully inhabit the available space, inviting the visitors to be plunged deep into their universe. This extraordinary scale accentuates the immersive quality, allowing the images to breathe and impose themselves with the same force as a cinema screen.

Original soundtrack

One of the distinctive features of The Singing Silences is the profound connection between the visual and the auditory, transforming the exhibition into a sensory dialogue. Each photograph is paired with an original, exclusive soundscape. This musical element is conceived as a narrative orchestral composition, resembling a symphonic poem, intended to be the narrative extension of the image. This approach, situated somewhere between theater and cinema, elevates the experience beyond simple accompaniment, plunging the visitor into a true musical and photographic fable. The music not only acts as an emotional echo to its corresponding photo, but its recurring themes also weave a cohesive thread throughout the entire exhibition, linking the images together like a mosaic. In this intimate experience, sound and image fuse to become indivisible

Poetic Captions

Certain photographs will be accompanied by short literary texts displayed nearby. These are not meant to describe the image, but rather to open it up. They offer a resonance, a counterpoint, or a window for interpretation. By reading the text, the spectator is sure to view the photograph in a different light. This element, alongside the images and sound, contributes to an experience that is an invitation to contemplation, poetry, and listening, in a dialogue between the senses.

Costumes and props

At the heart of the exhibition space, a supplementary installation will showcase the costumes, accessories, and set elements used during the various photo shoots. These objects are witnesses to the creative process , allowing the public to delve deeper and grasp the links between the visual universe and the symbolic, aesthetic, or scenographic choices behind the images. Furthermore, since these items have a prior history, a caption will be displayed to provide information on their origin or designer. This installation offers an additional layer of reading for the visitor.
